My interaction with clients (existing or potential) here at Eyeflow has been very enlightening. Especially when our discussions came down to the single most crucial question (not always phrased like that..):
“Would you spend money on social media marketing?”
I gathered many answers. I narrowed them down to the 5 most representative ones. Here they are:
1) “It’s not about the money. Social Media confuses me. I ‘d rather stay away.”
This is the fear syndrome. It’s the same kind of fear syndrome some companies had for the internet back in the 90s. For many companies, social media seems like a black box full of uncertainty but most of all, social media triggers the fear of transparency. Companies that are afraid of criticism and avoid listening to customer feedback usually keep a distance from social media. The funny part comes when they realize that they lose customers due to negative online reviews. Well, it’s never too late…
2) “I ‘ve heard some crazy things about Twitter. Will it increase my sales?”
Maybe yes. Maybe no. It depends on the business you run and what you will tweet about. Due to the crazy media coverage of twitter, people with no particular online experience may be familiar with twitter. Creating an account takes 5 minutes. Anyone can do it. What’s next though? If you tweet for business, you need a strategy. Are you using twitter for feedback? For promoting deals? For news and updates? A clear strategy is essential.
3) “I guess we can’t avoid it, so let’s do it”
Half true. It’s not that you can’t avoid social media. It’s that it doesn’t make sense to avoid it. I believe that there is a social media marketing strategy for every company. Even a dead simple one like reading the Google Local or Yelp reviews and revising your services or products. Starting a social media marketing campaign just because everyone’s doing it is a wrong approach though.
4)” We have the money but we don’t have the time.”
That’s a difficult one. I am not one of those who believe that spending 15 minutes a day on twitter is considered social media marketing. It takes time. It actually takes more time for the company itself than the agency that handles the campaign. An honest answer would be “if you have the money then find the time as well”. If you decide to start a social media marketing campaign make sure you have reserved time for it.
5) “Tell me more.”
Ok you got it. That’s the best answer. It shows that the company is wise enough to acknowledge that they don’t enough about social media. That doesn’t mean they will go for it but at least they are ready to listen to some professional advice.
Any other answer? Please post it in the comments! Thank you.
