Posted by Manolis Kounelakis On July - 20 - 2009

Sitemaps are very useful when you get lost in a website looking for something. It gives you the whole website structure in just a page. Sitemaps are very useful for SEO purposes as well. Not only the HTML sitemaps used in websites but also the XML sitemaps that are submitted in search engines. You can generate a XML sitemap for your own website using online tools like XML-Sitemaps. There some limitations there (the number of pages should be below 500) but otherwise it works great. You can then submit your XML sitemap to Google (through webmaster tools) to make sure your website is crawled 100%. In this video, Chris Hornak goes through the most basics of XML and HTML sitemaps. SEO Video: Get Links Instead Of Submitting Your Site To Search Engines

Posted by Manolis Kounelakis On July - 16 - 2009

Surprisingly enough, there are still companies that offer search engine submission services. Don’t laugh. Maybe this practice used to be effective back in 1998 but it’s certainly not effective in our days. The way to get your website listed in search engines is done by getting other websites link to yours. Nothing more. Nothing complex. How do you do that? If you have content that people want to share, then it’s a good idea to submit it in social bookmarking sites. You can also create profiles in some social media websites that allow you to provide a url that links to your site. There are also free directories that may be suitable for your website. Anything basically works except for the “submit to search engines” method. Chris Hornak goes through the best practices for getting listed in search engines and explains why anything else is just a waste of time.

SEO Video: Design Your Site Around Your Content

Posted by Manolis Kounelakis On July - 15 - 2009

The issue covered from our today’s video is big. Bigger than the length of the video. It is the issue of what goes first, the content or the design. If you have been around the web for some time you would answer “First content and then design”. Well, yes that’s correct but many people stick first with a design they like and then try to fit their content into this design. The result is an unusable website and an SEO nightmare. In this video, Chris Hornak explains what’s the best way to combine content and design in order to create user and search engine friendlier websites.

SEO Video: Social Bookmarking Sites And NoFollow Links

Posted by Manolis Kounelakis On July - 14 - 2009

A big part of any SEO campaign is link building. And that’s why social bookmarking websites used to offer great help in that. Some of them used to offer dofollow links (thus allowing search engine bots to crawl through these links), passing in that way great value to the linked page and helping the website move up the search results. These days are gone though. Social bookmarking websites have no need to attract users by offering dofollow links and almost all of them are nofollow. However, traffic is important as well. And if your content is worth sharing you will get a lot of traffic. In this video, Chris Hornak shares his thoughts on how users should use social bookmarking sites to increase the popularity of their content and discusses about the nofollow link status.

SEO Video: How Search Engine Bots See Your Website

Posted by Manolis Kounelakis On July - 13 - 2009

When designing a website, keep in mind that search engines don’t “see” your website the way you do. Search engine bots (software that crawls through websites across the web moving from link to link) read basically what we call “page source”. In that sense, you should expect that images and flash objects, even if they are pleasing and very meaningful to the the human eye, they may be sort of invisible by the search engine spiders. There are html tags that help us describe the content included in images but they cannot compensate the full effect that images or flash have to users. In this video, Chris Hornak uses a sample site that is image-heavy to show how it is seen from the eyes of a search engine. In order to do that, he uses SEO-Browser.com, an essential tool for anyone who wants to optimize a website.

SEO Video: Why To Design Your Site With A Flat Hierarchy

Posted by Manolis Kounelakis On July - 9 - 2009

Over the last years, web design has a made a big jump towards easier navigation and user friendliness. This is not only affecting the way users navigate the websites but also the way search engines crawl them. To put it as simply as possible: Search engines don’t like websites with pages that are 3 links deep from the homepage. It is very important to design your site hierarchy in the flattest possible way. Just as users, search engines too, prefer websites that offer straightforward and non-complicated hierarchy. This fact should be a primary concern when optimizing a website to be search engine friendly. In this video, Chris Hornak goes over this SEO strategy and provides some useful examples.
