Google's Blended Search Results not only offer a dynamic selection of media or users, it also offers businesses more venues to get their content seen on the web.

I’m not a fan of coffee, but I enjoy a rich Google blend
Google has been offering up “blended search” for years now, but not everyone fully understands what that means. Previously, Google had various “search verticals” where users could use Google to search for new articles, pictures, videos, maps, and more. The problem was that these verticals just didn’t get the use that Google’s main search did.
The solution? Throw in all that other stuff into Google’s main results. The results looks like this

You’ll notice

news results at the top

followed by some typical web page Google results

then the newest entry to Google’s blended results – “Latest results” (which draws from Twitter and well as other sources)

followed by image results

There are also some video results at the bottom of that page (I cut them off to keep the big image manageable)

Blended results are not only great for users, but they’re also a great opportunity for everyone with content on the web. This increases the visibility of your pictures, videos, tweets, news stories, and more.

Seize the Opportunity Available in Blended Results

Eyeflow internet marketing offers full service packages that can help you show up in these sections of Google’s blended search results. Do you have pictures of products? We can help them show up in the images section. Do you have videos you want posted online? We can help syndicate them to major video sharing sites and optimize them so they can show up in Google’s results. These are just a couple examples of how Eyeflow’s services can help you gain more visibility in blended search.
Blended search also gives your company more chances to dominate the search results. Imagine your website showing up in the Google website results, video results, news results, and local results – all on one page!

It is important to target and develop long tail rankings in addition to head term rankings. A big reason for this is that these keyword phrases are more likely to drive interested and converting traffic to your website.

Everyone wants to rank for the short “head terms” in search engines. Some people want these ranking for the prestige, while others are interested in the traffic. While the traffic brought in by these high-volume terms can be a big boost to your site, you must first be cognizant of the type of traffic you are drawing in.

Products and Information

The internet is a great resource for people looking to buy things, and those are the people you want to target. There are also millions of people searching the internet for informational reasons. These people aren’t interested in buying, they’re just looking for information. They could be working on a school project, doing industry research, or trying to settle a bet. These people make up a percent of the people searching for high-volume keywords, and because of this, these keywords often do not convert as well as “long tail” searches.

Not Just Getting Found – Getting Found by the Right People

Long tail terms do not get the same amount of traffic as head terms, but they typically convert better. This is because they’re more targeted towards people interested in purchasing products. For example, the phrase “Samsung 25 monitor sale” may not have many searches, but you know if you rank highly for that term and your price is right, then you’ve got a sale.

Everything has a Purpose

This is why it is important to target and develop long tail rankings; the two (long tail terms and head terms) work together to help develop website visibility and web presence. Head terms are great for bringing in traffic, while long tail brings in those who are willing to buy. By getting them both, you can really start to see a difference.

There is a time and place for everything, and PPC and SEO both have their place in building websites. The key is to know the sweet spot for ROI on both services.

Owning vs Renting

Your website is your business’s home online. When you are designing your website and establishing yourself online, you want to make sure you’re building value for your business. SEO is a great way to give your website more value. Along with time, SEO can give your website and business more expose and breadth than you would have considered in the beginning.

What about PPC?

PPC is good for a number of things. One of the best things PPC can do is give your website a quick shot of traffic. The downside is that PPC doesn’t build value for your website over time. When you cut off your PPC budget, your website goes back to where it was before you started your PPC campaign.

Long-Term ROI of SEO

One of the best reasons to use SEO to develop your online visibility is because it builds long-term value for your website. Even though constant SEO development is recommended for best results, if you need to take a break from SEO for a couple of months you won’t lose all your traffic. This makes the potential ROI of SEO great, but hard to measure.

There is a time and place for everything, and PPC and SEO both have their place in building websites. This is why we developed an affordable package that combines PPC and SEO to highlight the strengths of both services. PPC is utilized to provide a early boost in traffic, and SEO builds the long term value of your page. If you’re interested in this package – or one of Eyeflow’s full SEO packages – contact Eyeflow today!

The most recent update to Eyeflow's SEO Raking tool - SEOzio - includes a redirect checker so you can tell whether there is a redirect on your homepage. Redirects can really hurt your site if done incorrectly, so it is a good idea to check to see what your status is!

As a part of our ongoing efforts to provide the best SEO ranking tool, we’ve added a redirect checker to SEOzio. Redirects play a huge role in SEO and usability, so it is important to know if there is a redirect on your homepage.

About Redirects

Redirects are (or at least should be) set up to redirect users when a page has been renamed or moved. Not setting up a redirect is highly advisable because not doing so can lead to duplicate content penalties or 404 errors. Duplicate content is much more of an issue from a search engine performance standpoint, but 404 errors are bad for search engines and users alike.

Avoid Duplicate Content

Redirects are an excellent thing to have, especially when they eliminate duplicate content. For example, redirecting the non-www version of your site to the www version saves you from having duplicate sites at www.mysite.com and mysite.com. This also comes into play if you buy additional domains or top-level-domains (e.g. mynewproduct.com, mysite.org). Having duplicate sites across various domains and top-level-domains is a great way to confuse search engines and make it hard for users to find you.

Avoid 404s

Whenever a user attempts to navigate to a page which doesn’t exist, he or she gets a 404 “Not Found” error message. This is poor for the user’s experience, and if a search engine comes across a lot of 404 errors when crawling your site you can be penalized. This is why it is important to set up a redirect whenever a page is moved or renamed.

Types of Redirects

There are many reasons to use redirects, but there is only one redirect you should be using.

301

While other redirects (such as 302) have the same effects for users, they are markedly worse than 301 redirects from a SEO perspective. This is because 301 redirects pass the value of the redirecting page to the new page, whereas 302 redirects don’t. This is especially important when you’ve built up one domain for years, but then decide to move to another domain. You don’t want to leave behind your years of hard work, do you?

Check for Redirects Now

SEOzio now automatically checks for redirects on your home page whenever you use it. If you have a redirect you will see one of the following.

As you can tell by the colors, one result is good, and the others are not.

keyword research

Your site's keyword development is like an funnel which increases over time. As SEO develops your site, you can pull in traffic from more and more keywords.

A good way to visualize your keywords and SEO targeting is through the image of a funnel.

You start off with a very small funnel, grabbing keywords and searches that are very specific to your website. In SEO, the first thing you want to make sure you can do is rank for your own business name. If you are not the #1 result for your own business name, there is probably some sort of problem with your website (barring a generic brand name, such as “Top Software”). Once you assure you are ranking for your own name then you are tapped into the very core of the funnel, which are people searching specifically for your business.

Phase 2 in Keyword Development – Long Tail Non-branded Terms

After ranking for your business name you take a step outwards and expand your funnel. These are generally long tail queries. For example, if you were working on a website for a hotel in Pittsburgh, a good place to start would probably be “affordable downtown Pittsburgh PA hotel”. Ranking for this term may not be as exciting as raking #1 for “hotels”, but SEO is a developmental process, and you have to crawl before you walk, and you have to do even more before you’re the number #1 result for “hotels”.

So When Do I Get To Rank for Large National Terms?

If you’re just at the beginning of your SEO campaign, it will probably be some time before you’ve worked your way up to the national level.

While it is good to keep your eyes on your long term keyword goals, it is also important to be in tune with where you are and where your next move is taking you. Let’s go back to the hotel example. Once you’ve got consistent rankings on the 1st page of Google for the keywords “affordable downtown Pittsburgh PA hotel”, then you can narrow your focus some. Start targeting “Pittsburgh PA hotel” or even “Pittsburgh hotel”. If you start to gain some traction there, then you’re on your way.

Increasing keyword rankings for hotels is just a small example of what goes on at Eyeflow. We provide full featured SEO packages including link building, keyword development, content assistance, article syndication, full site analytics, and much more. If you’re interested in developing your online presence and getting more targeted traffic to your website, contact Eyeflow Internet Marketing for a free website analysis.
